Next, the layout is planned. The room is measured and a starting line is marked—usually from the center or along the longest wall—to ensure the tiles or planks are installed straight and evenly. Dry-fitting a few rows helps confirm spacing and avoid narrow cuts along the edges.

Depending on the type of LVT, installation methods vary. Click-lock (floating) LVT planks snap together without adhesive, forming a secure surface that “floats” over the subfloor. Glue-down LVT, on the other hand, requires spreading a pressure-sensitive adhesive before placing each tile or plank. In both cases, pieces are cut to fit edges, corners, and around obstacles like door frames or vents using a utility knife or cutter.

As the flooring is installed, consistent spacing and alignment are maintained. A tapping block or roller may be used to secure connections or ensure proper adhesion. Expansion gaps are left around the perimeter for floating floors to allow for slight movement due to temperature changes.

Once all the flooring is in place, the finishing steps begin. Baseboards or trim are installed (or reinstalled) to cover expansion gaps, and transition strips are added where the LVT meets other types of flooring. The surface is then cleaned, and the floor is ready for use—often immediately in the case of click-lock systems.
