Installing a new electric fireplace is one of the more straightforward home upgrades, but it still benefits from careful planning and safe setup. Here’s a clear, practical description of how the process typically goes:
First, you choose the installation type. Electric fireplaces come in several styles—wall-mounted, recessed (built into the wall), insert (fitting into an existing fireplace opening), or freestanding. The type you pick determines how involved the installation will be.
Next, you prepare the location. This means selecting a spot near a standard electrical outlet (most units plug into a regular 120V outlet, though larger ones may require a dedicated circuit). You’ll also want to ensure the wall can support the weight of the unit and that there’s proper clearance from furniture, curtains, or other materials.
If you’re installing a wall-mounted unit, you’ll typically:
Locate and mark wall studs for secure anchoring
Install a mounting bracket using screws and a level
Hang the fireplace unit onto the bracket
For a recessed installation, the process is a bit more involved:
Cut an opening in the wall to match the fireplace dimensions
Frame the opening (similar to a window frame)
Slide the unit into place and secure it to the framing
If you’re using an insert:
Place it into an existing fireplace cavity
Secure it if required
Add trim panels if needed for a finished look
Once the unit is physically installed, you plug it in (or have it hardwired by an electrician if required). Then you test all functions—heat output, flame effects, remote control, and safety shutoff.
Finally, you finish the surrounding area. This might include adding trim, a mantel, or decorative elements to blend the fireplace into your room’s design.
Overall, electric fireplaces are popular because they don’t require venting, gas lines, or chimneys, making installation much simpler than traditional fireplaces. Still, if any wiring changes are needed, it’s best to involve a licensed electrician to keep everything safe and up to code.
